Our purpose

The Elders Council provides folks who have helped to create and build BC's world-class parks system with the opportunity to continue to support it when they retire from full-time park work or advocacy.

Elders Council members participate in action-based project work aimed at ensuring the long-term well-being of BC's world-class parks system.

Membership is free!

BC Parks Futures Forum

Photo: Karen BlinkhornIn June, 2006, the Elders Council brought together great park conservationists to help develop ideas for ensuring a bright future for our parks. Our goal is a sustainable park system by 2011, the 100th anniversary of the British Columbia provincial parks system.

Our next major Park Forum will be held in the Fall of 2009, and will centre on marine and oceans. Would you like to help? Or attend the forum? Contact Jim Barlow.

June 2006 Forum

Download a pdf summary here.

Here is a short summary of the event:

There are three major thrusts now occurring to move some ideas forward.

  • The Ministry is advancing proposals for considering by Treasury Board and Cabinet
  • The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Association and the World Wildlife fund are working with other NGO’s and various entities to mobilize some action on this topic
  • The Elders Council made a presentation to the Special Parliamentary Committee that has been touring BC seeking ideas on budget spending.

Don’t be surprised if you are contacted by one of these groups for input and involvement.

Thanks so much to everyone who took part in this very special weekend. We got some ideas and suggestions that were truly excellent and a really good sense of some of the core ideas that the group felt were really important.
