Minutes of the Elders Council for Parks
Elders Council Meeting Notes
November 2nd, 2009
Present: Bob Peart, Rick Searle, Nancy Wilkin, Derek, Ric Careless
Colin Campbell, Lara Tisseur
Centennial
Derek updated the group on the status of the Steering Committee and the steps they are taking to determine their next steps. Their next meeting is in December. Derek confirmed that he can no longer 'head' the Elders Centennial conversation.
It was agreed that Bob/Ric and Wayne Stetski can lead our input. Bob to phone Wayne to confirm his interest. This group then needs to lead a discussion to determine what 3-5 key doable initiatives might be that BC Parks could undertake during the Centennial.
It is hard to determine quite where the government is going with this, but it is encouraging that they seem to finally be taking the Centennial opportunity seriously.
Rick Searle confirmed his continued interest in producing Centennial/History videos.
Reminder that we need to thank Jim Anderson for his contribution. We discussed making Jim's paper available on our website and in our newsletter making it available for photocopy and mailing cost ($15??)
Parks Canada Celebrations
Rick Searle informed the group that he is maintaining contact with the Parks Canada individuals leading both the 100th Anniversary celebrations and the celebrations related to the 125th Anniversary of Banff.
Elders Relationship with Government
Colin confirmed that the next Deputy meeting is scheduled 8:30 am, Wednesday November 4th. We discussed the need for us to develop our own perspective on a governance delivery system for BC Parks as it seems internal documents are being prepared for potential approval 6 months from now.. Colin, Nancy, Ric and Denis O'Gorman were discussed as our leads on this, and they will follow-up after the Deputies meeting. Agreed that a good stepping off point are the principals that we developed a number of months ago.
Action: Colin to email out key principles to group.
Archives
Bob to discuss with Gail Ross whether she can pick up this role.
Marine Protected Areas Conference Overview
What are our recommendations given the summary report that will be distributed by Julie and Sabine.
Action: Discuss with Jim as to what he thinks the Elders Council can do with recommendations. What are our next steps forward?
Newsletter
Lara is modifying the email distribution list. Goal is to have a fall newsletter, electronic distribution early December. The website needs to be updated so it is current and has our newsletters and previous meeting notes posted.
Action: Any items for the fall newsletter please.
Could insert a few archive photos from Jim Anderson's collection into the newsletter and there should be a summary of the Marine Forum.
Relationship with Parks Canada
Action: Bob to contact Jim/Neil about the status of the proposed meeting with senior Parks Canada officials.
