Minutes of the Elders Council for Parks
Elders Council Meeting Notes
March 2, 2009
Present:
Nancy Wilkin, Bob Peart, Rick Searle, Derek Thompson, Breeonne Baxter, Lara Tisseur.
1. February 2nd, 2009 meeting notes approved.
Updates:
a) Lara leaves March 9th. Will leave a structure for the next Coordinator. Mel will update the group re: the hiring process to replace Lara and what the timing may be. Everyone thanked Lara for her contribution.
b)Graham MacDonald will no longer be the lead for archives.
We need to set in motion a new archivist... Rick Searle agreed to play the interim role, perhaps with the assistance of Gail Ross. We need to continue our relationship with Laura at the UVIC archives branch. We need to consider what amount of material is out there and who is sorting this material, based on what criteria. Chloe had understood from Graham MacDonald that there are many archivists collecting Parks material. Perhaps the Elders should initialize an archivist committee in order to discern what is where and how to deal with the archival parks material. There is federal funding and perhaps a grant from an Alberta Foundation to assist with this process.
2. National Parks Branch Centennial – 2011
Rick Searle met with retired Parks Canada officials to discuss a concept plan for the centennial. Harkin needs to be profiled as well. We still need to determine what our role will be in their Centennial. There is the potential to meet with Knowledge Network and PBS, due to the magnitude of all materials that can be harnessed and organized of BC Parks, 'world-class Park system'. The collection and archival opportunities with this may lead to future videos and work with Networks. Great opportunity for the Elders Council to further promote awareness.
Action: Rick to draft a formal letter of support from the Elders Council and forward it to Bob to approve and sign. for the Second Century Club and to outline potential Elders involvement.
3. Fall 09 Marine Gathering
Bob Peart reported that he had spoken to Jim Barlow, Sabine Jessen, Phil Dearden and Bill Henwood. Agreed that trying to 'assemble' the Elders at the same time was a good idea.
Action: Chloe's office to organize a conference call for the end of March/early April of these critical folks to confirm concept details, timing, location, etc.
4. Minister's and DM's Meeting
Derek created a proposal for the Centennial celebration. Scott Benton met with Doug Konkin February 26th. Need to take the Centennial ideas forward to the minister for his endorsement prior the election campaign.
Action: Derek and Colin to remain in touch base with key provincial folks.
5. Spring Newsletter and Website There is now a draft outline for the Spring Newsletter consisting of five pages. All agreed that getting the newsletter out in late April was the goal. The e-mail distribution will include the BC Parks retired list and the 2nd Century list from Jim Barlow. Breeonne will continue to update the website.
Action: Breeonne to contact the people necessary to get various sections written. A draft final copy will be ready for the April meeting to approve.
6. Elders Plaques
Lara corresponded with Ali Lake on the progress of the preview drafts. She will be travelling to the Island as well as inland to interview the elders.
Action: Mel to follow up with Ali at the end of March on her progress.
7. Fundraising.
Lara to send off 1) Jim Pattison Grant, and 2) Gaming Commission application.
Action: Colin to send Lara the Gaming Void Cheque as soon as it arrives at the bank.
