Elders Council Meeting Notes
July 6, 2009
Present: Colin Campbell, Bob Peart, Mel Turner, Lara Tisseur, Chloe O'Loughlin, Paul Skydt, Nancy Wilkin, Denis O'Gorman.
Updates:
- Breeone is no longer with CPAWS.
- Meeting with the Deputy is scheduled for September, with no specific date set.
Newsletter
- Chloe updated that the newsletter is ready and will be sent out as soon as the mailing list is ready.
Action:
Lara to help Chloe in merging 3 lists for electronic newsletter mail out. Lara to contact Mona Holley for BC Parks retirees list and Neil Munroe for updated 2nd Century names.
Marine Forum
- Dates set for October 6th & 7th, location of forum in Cowichan or Nanaimo area.
- Dick Beamish proposed as the noon speaker on the 7th.
- Phil Dearden may have 10k to aid in funding.
- Discussed the idea of engaging regional districts into attending. Potential districts of interest to invite: West Van, Metro Van, Sunshine Coast and Squamish.
- Important that we as the Elders Council determine what we want as an outcome and that isn't that clear yet.
Action:
Lara to contact Chloe and Sabine to start to coordinate the forum, set-up, logistics, etc.
Parks Canada
- The meeting with Wayne Bourque and a number of the Elders on how to strengthen our ties went well.
- Parks Canada highlighted their focus on enticing more people to visit parks and that there are at this time no significant details related to the 2011 celebration of the National Parks Branch.
Action
- Wayne, Steve and Neil to set up a meeting with Bill Fisher as a follow-up.
- Bob agreed to set up a Fall meeting with Gary Lunn MP.
Deputies Meeting
- Had a positive meeting to discuss the Centennial promo document for 2011. Agreed that this was an excellent document and were pleased with Doug's leadership.
- Derek to collect names of high status/ profile people to be asked to be to sit on the proposed committees.
- Mel proposed the idea of outlining a land acquisition program and to highlight the rationale of why this is important.
Action:
- Lara to send list of names compiled from meeting.
- Mel and Colin to call Scott and get an update as to changes to regions, divisions, staffing etc.
Financial Proposals
- Gaming commission re-submitted.
- Lara to contact Nancy to start process of Habitat Conservation Proposal.
