Minutes of the Elders Council for Parks

Elders Council Meeting Notes
August 10, 2009

Present: Mel Turner, Lara Tisseur, Denis O'Gorman, Derek Thompson, Colin Campbell.

Updates: 

  • Breeone is no longer with CPAWS.
  • Meeting with the Deputy is scheduled for September, with no specific date set.

Newsletter

Action:   

  • Newsletter to be emailed out this week by Lara.
  • Lara to discuss website expiry with CPAWS and rehabilitate site and then discuss and update website and newsletter arrangements with CPAWS to reach clarity on responsibilities

Marine Forum

  • Dates set for October 6th & 7th, venue at Cowichan Bay is booked.
  • Funding from DFO funding, Parks Canada.
  • Invitation list is in the works, 50-60 people invited, 30-35 expected

Action:               

  • Elders will participate as invited and explain Elders role.
  • Lara will offer assistance to Sabine as required.

Parks Canada follow-up meeting

Parks Canada has contacted Rick in regards to the proposal from Eikos and Niche Communications.  A meeting is scheduled for late August or early September

2011 Centennial Progress

  • Derek informed that key action items have been put into a “concept paper”, sent via deputy to Premier’s office for briefing. Reasonable progress has been made and Deputy on board with content of paper.
  • There may be an opportunity for BC Parks to be involved in the Olympic torch event; Vernon/Penticton.  Steering committee, if appointed, to meet on an action plan.
  • Letter of Intent for Shaw video series to run 2010-2011 on Shaw and 19 affiliated channels.
  • Ric updated on sponsorship, contacts and marketing for promoting the videos, with the potential for promoting for sponsorship.
  • Rick met with the learning Resources Group with the Ministry of Education to discuss using the videos as part of curriculum.
  • Tentative meetings scheduled with Courtenay and Comox for screening of videos.
  • Discussed partnership proposal between Parks and Eikos Communications including  $ to stay in BC Parks for park enhancement via interpretive programs.

Action

  • Ric to prepare a draft by November outlining the relationship between BC Parks and Eikos Communications and between Rick and the Elders through an MOU, stating the nature of relationship.
  • Derek addressed a parallel need to draw a line between his potential role of chair on the Centennial steering committee and his work with Elders.
  • Bob to query as to who in Elders will take on Derek’s role with the Centennial file to work with steering committee.

Deputy Meetings

  • Colin - advised no planned agenda items or schedule for a deputy meeting. Discussion revolved around continued involvement with deputy meetings, issues of resources, support and utility. Agreement that the Elders need to come to some conclusion on relationship and further engagement with BC Parks

Action:

  • Discuss at next meeting
    • How are Elders to relate to government?
    • Our involvement in deputy meetings?
  • Mel and Colin to call Scott and get an update as to changes to regions, divisions, staffing etc.

Heritage Centre and Elders Profiles

  • Mel updated on 2 nearly completed profiles, remaining 11 drafted, – no timeline for completion.
  • Lara updated Heritage Centre’s walk/talk program with Coastal health’s Healthy Living Program

Action:

  • Lara to arrange to record people who are attending walks over the next months as well as visitors to the Centre as future contacts for the Elders programs.

NEXT MEETING

Scheduled for September 14th, 11 – 2 sit down meeting at Colin’s place focusing on Elders relationship with BC Parks
